This Month’s Meeting:
Program Manager: Paul Kraska - Twin-SPIN
Topic: Do's and Don'ts of Appraisal Preparation
Speaker: Pat O'Toole, Principal Consultant, PACTKathy
Abstract:
So you're thinking about conducting a CMMI-based appraisal in the next 6-9 months and you're wondering how to get from here to there as smoothly as possible. Believe it or not, it CAN be done!
Planning and preparation are key ingredients for a successful appraisal. (Actually performing and institutionalizing the practices to be evaluated also helps!) So what are the critical steps you need to take to get ready for this organizational ordeal, and are there things that you should avoid doing along the way?
The "Do's and Don'ts of Appraisal Preparation" is intended to answer these questions. Pat O'Toole is an SEI-certified SCAMPI high maturity lead appraiser who has conducted more than 50 formal CMM- and CMMI-based appraisals. He has seen firsthand what works and what doesn't and will share his insights into this pertinent topic in his usual, irreverent way!
Speaker's Bio:
As a Principal Consultant with PACT, Pat O'Toole works with all levels of management, (S)EPGs, and Process Action Teams in establishing, evaluating, and sustaining their process improvement initiatives. Pat is one of the most active SEI-certified SCAMPI high maturity lead appraisers, and has led appraisals spanning all maturity levels, including one of the largest and most complex maturity level 5 appraisals ever conducted. Pat has published over 40 articles on process improvement - including his popular "Do's and Don'ts" series as well as ATLAS ("Ask The Lead AppraiserS") - an email based forum that explores model interpretation issues.
He is an SEI Transition Partner for the "Intro to CMMI" course, having taught the course more than 50 times. Pat is a Visiting Scientist at the SEI, where he teaches the "Intermediate Concepts" course, the "CMMI Instructor" course, and observes "Intro to CMMI" candidate instructors. Pat is vice-chairman of the SEI's Board of Professional Conduct, and also served as a member of the SEI's 12-person Expert Group for CMMI Interpretive Guidance project.
