Richard Stallman (Free Software Foundation), The Free Software Movement and the GNU/Linux Operating System

October 21, 2008

Location: University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN

Hello all,

Richard Stallman, the founder of Free Software Foundation, will be giving a talk in Minneapolis on the Free Software Movement. Details about the talk and the speaker appear below.

This talk has been specially arranged in the hope that it would be of interest to our students; the local ACM Student Chapter is one of the sponsors of the event. However, the event is being widely advertised and attendance is also open to the public. We have a room that will seat 600 people but we still anticipate running out of space. For this reason, please plan on coming early if you will be attending.

We hope to see many of you at the talk!

Talk Title: The Free Software Movement and the GNU/Linux Operating System

Abstract:

Richard Stallman will speak about the Free Software Movement, which campaigns for freedom so that computer users can cooperate to control their own computing activities. The Free Software Movement developed the GNU operating system, often erroneously referred to as Linux, specifically to establish these freedoms.

When: October 21, 2008, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Location: Room 175 Willey Hall

About the Speaker and the Free Software Foundation:

Richard Stallman, is the founder of the Free Software Foundation (http://www.fsf.org) and the GNU project (http://www.gnu.org) and is the originator of the GNU Public License, often called "copyleft." Much of the computing infrastructure of the Web, and of our Computer Science department, is built on GNU software and other software that is released under the GPL or other "free software" licenses like the Apache license.
