This Month’s Meeting:

Program Manager:  Mark Thompson – Target
Topic: Design for Six Sigma
Speaker: David Hallowell - Six Sigma Advantage

Abstract:

Since the start of Six Sigma there have been efforts to find and test its applicability in software design and development.  After some considerable evolution, there is now some good evidence on potential synergy and ‘what works for software’ in practical terms. >From the core “DMAIC” improvement methodology to ‘Design for Six Sigma’ (DFSS) software teams and business leaders are learning to tailor Six Sigma for results that both can appreciate.

In that connection, the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has studied companies using Six Sigma to support CMMI Process Areas and accelerate CMMI-level assessment goals.  Two new SEI courses; “Measuring for Performance-Driven Improvement (MPDI 1 and 2) are putting into practice the methods their studies found most useful. (http://www.sei.cmu.edu/products/courses/p49.html)

 This discussion will:

  • Briefly trace the evolution of Six Sigma toward suitability for software design and development.
  • Overview the MPDI-1 Course
    • The DMAIC Roadmap as a problem-solving framework
    • Six Sigma guidance on building and using measurement systems
    • Measuring, scaling, and sustaining results
  • Outline the MPDI-2 course being developed for 2007
    • Design for Six Sigma and CMMI

Speaker Biography:

David Hallowell has 25+ years experience as an engineer, manager and team coach.

He is a Visiting Scientist at SEI, and co-founder of the company selected as industry partner for developing the MPDI courses, Six Sigma Advantage, Inc.

With a special focus on software and systems design, he has led teams in the design and delivery of a number of successful commercial products.  He has authored courses in Software Process Management, Design of Experiments, C++, and Computational Intelligence Tools.  Dave has patents and publications in the area of microelectronics  packaging and high speed interconnect.

Twin-SPIN Mission Statement:
The Twin-SPIN software process improvement network  (SPIN) is a regional organization established in January of 1996 as a   forum for the free and open exchange of software process improvement   experiences and ideas. Representatives from industry, government, academia, other professional organizations, and consultants are welcome to participate. Our mission is to help sustain commitment and enhance skills in the area of software process improvement through an active program of networking and mutual support. The organization strives to serve as a source of educational and experiential information for its members, other SPIN organizations, and the general community of software professionals.

Meetings are normally held on the 1st Thursday of each month from 5:45-8:00 p.m. Twin-SPIN is a non-profit organization and is sponsored by the University of Minnesota Center for Software Engineering (UMSEC).  See: http://twin-spin.cs.umn.edu
