Hornbacher, MBA. His presentation will describe very good project risk management practices – vetted through global forums and validated in practice. The six processes of managing project risk from the Project Management Institute’s PMBOK® Guide* will be compared with those in use by systems engineers, the Department of Defense, and The Association for Project Management (United Kingdom). Experiences from Mr. Hornbacher’s varied assignments will illustrate portability and scalability of the systematic approach. For those who seek to learn about the essentials of managing project risk, this presentation will provide an excellent introduction. For persons more experienced in applying good practices, the interactive workshop format will yield opportunities to ask probing questions. *A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge – Third Edition (2004) Bio: Keith D. Hornbacher, MBA, is an experienced Project Risk Management practitioner and conference speaker with more than two decades of work in North America and Europe. Mr. Hornbacher manages project risks in complex systems software/hardware development and integration, pharmaceutical research/development/manufacturing, and high tech medical devices. He recently returned from Washington, DC, where his cost/schedule risk analysis of a $550 million construction project supported testimony before the U.S. Senate. In addition, he brings unique perspectives to this professional meeting that span many industries and domains. Signature achievements include a quantitative cost/schedule risk analysis of plans to build a multi billion dollar offshore oil drilling platform in the North Atlantic’s “ice berg alley”. He also used Monte Carlo simulation techniques to analyze risks of advanced “stealth” tactical fighter prototypes; directed project controls, risk and logistical analyses of major cross country natural gas pipelines; and was the program risk manager for the “next generation” satellite based, U.S. air traffic management system. Mr. Hornbacher’s work has been presented and published in component conference proceedings of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Council On Systems Engineering (INCOSE). In addition to delivering workshops during recent pharmaceutical R & D project management conferences, he conducted Project Risk Management tutorials during The Aerospace Corporation’s Space Systems Engineering Risk Management Symposium – 2005, for systems engineering classes, University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), and as an adjunct faculty member, University of Minnesota.
